British Tea Time in Arizona
Last January, I was honored to join Daughters of the British Empire (DBE), a national philanthropic organization in the United States, comprising women of British or Commonwealth heritage collectively and Nationally now known as: DBE A British and Commonwealth of Nations Women's Organization. Established in 1909, the DBE focuses on charitable activities, cultural preservation, and fostering a sense of community among its members.
In Arizona, the DBE has been active since 1939, with chapters located in South and Central Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Peoria, and Prescott. These chapters engage in various fundraising events and community service projects to support both national and local charities. A significant portion of their efforts is dedicated to supporting The British Home in California, a residential care facility for elderly individuals of British descent, and local chapters have contributed to additional local nonprofits including Southwest Wildlife and Saint Mary’s Foodbank.
The Arizona chapters raise funds through afternoon teas and local markets. Additionally, the DBE in Arizona participates in commemorative events, such as the City of Mesa’s Memorial Day Service, honoring RAF pilots who died while training at Falcon Field during World War II. Membership in the DBE is open to women residing in the United States who are of British or Commonwealth birth, naturalized U.S. citizens with British or Commonwealth heritage, or women whose spouses or parents are of British or Commonwealth descent. The organization emphasizes cultural exchange, friendship, and community service.
