We’ve been captivated by recently released photographs from NASA’s James Webb Telescope, and it made us want to spend more time exploring the night sky.
The study of astronomy has long been important to the citizens of Arizona. Prior to Arizona gaining official statehood, notable Arizona astronomers, Percival Lowell and Andrew Ellicot Douglas, began to establish our first observatory in Flagstaff in 1894.
Today, all three of Arizona’s public universities have observatories and offer degrees in astronomical sciences; University of Arizona’s astronomy program is most esteemed (ranking number three in the nation). Our state is known for its remarkably dark skies, and there are ample opportunities for the public to learn from university experts.
