I know you have been running around nonstop showing homes, networking, and trying to juggle everything at once. Summer is great for business, but let’s be honest — this heat can knock you flat if you are not careful. I just wanted to share a few reminders so you can take care of yourself while you are out there making deals happen.
First, keep water with you at all times. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine say women should aim for about 2.7 liters a day and men about 3.7, but in our line of work with back-to-back showings and open houses, you might need more (National Academies, 2005). Skip the extra coffee refills and maybe hold back on the iced cocktails after happy hour tours since both caffeine and alcohol can make dehydration worse.
Second, think about what you are wearing on those long days in and out of the car. Light, breathable fabrics in lighter colors make a huge difference. The Mayo Clinic says they help your body cool down more effectively (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Throw on a wide-brimmed hat if you are doing outdoor showings, and please do not forget sunscreen — the American Academy of Dermatology says SPF 30 or higher and reapply every couple of hours, especially if you are sweating through back-to-back tours (AAD, 2024).
Try to book your outdoor-heavy showings early in the morning or later in the evening when it is cooler. If you have to be out in the middle of the day, sneak into shaded spots between appointments or step inside for a few minutes of AC. The EPA even recommends public places like libraries or cooling centers if you need a break between meetings (EPA, 2023).

Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, start sweating more than usual, get nauseous, or have muscle cramps, you might be heading toward heat exhaustion. The CDC says you should cool down right away, drink water, and rest, because if you push through, it can turn into heat stroke, which is a medical emergency (CDC, 2022).
And please, check in on colleagues, clients, and neighbors who might be more vulnerable during a heat wave. The World Health Organization says that looking out for each other can make a huge difference (WHO, 2018).
I know the summer market can be intense, but staying safe in this heat will help you keep your energy up and your business running strong. Take care of yourself out there — your clients (and your friends) need you healthy.
