In March, we attended a home safety meeting at the McDowell Mountain Ranch Community Center during which Office Katzaroff, a representative of the Scottsdale Police Department offered valuable suggestions to help homeowners keep their homes and valuables safe. Among the topics covered were: the importance of knowing your neighbors, detecting suspicious behaviors, and implementing effective security measures. By being aware of potential risks and taking proactive steps, you can protect your home and loved ones from intruders and criminals.
Know (and Love) Your Neighbors:
One of the key aspects of home safety is building a strong relationship with your neighbors. Get to know the people living next door, in front, and behind your house. By fostering a sense of community, you can establish a network of support and keep an eye out for any unusual activities in the neighborhood. You might consider inviting the neighbors over for a happy hour during which you can exchange contact information. Before you leave town, ask a neighbor you trust to keep an eye on your home.
Delayed Detection of Crime:
Alarm systems play a crucial role in detecting and deterring crime. However, it's important to understand that alarm activations are not always the top priority for the police. In many cases, there can be a delay of at least 15 minutes before law enforcement is dispatched. To improve response times, tell your alarm company to activate your alarm settings to call the police first between 4-8 pm. Additionally, camera systems such as Ring provide real-time notifications and interactive features, these features can help detect criminal activity immediately. If there is a crime in progress, call 911 which will elicit the quickest police response. Additionally, if you witness any suspicious behavior, immediately contact the police, who will respond promptly.
Fortifying Entry Points:
Entry points, such as windows and doors, are potential weaknesses in your home's security. Install primary and secondary locks on all windows and doors to make it harder for intruders to gain access. Consider using secondary locks and deadbolts on closet doors as an additional layer of protection. Avoid storing valuable items in obvious places, like master bedroom drawers, and instead, utilize a safe that is built into the home and too heavy for one person to lift. Alternatively, consider installing shatter-proof window film to delay criminals from entering.
Beware of Scams and Fraud:
Scams and fraud have become increasingly prevalent, particularly online. Be cautious of unsolicited prizes or promises, high-pressure tactics that demand immediate action, and unusual payment methods such as gift cards or cash apps. Always verify the authenticity of a company before responding to any requests or clicking on links. Program important contacts into your phone to ensure you have the correct numbers.
Utilize Security Measures:
Investing in security measures can significantly enhance the safety of your home. Installing cameras in strategic locations, such as the front door and interior of the garage, allows you to receive real-time notifications and monitor any suspicious activity. Hardwiring the cameras into the modem helps prevent disruption by WiFi jammers. Additionally, having a dog or displaying stickers and signs indicating the presence of security systems can act as deterrents for potential intruders.

Well-lit surroundings can discourage criminals from targeting your home. Ensure proper lighting around the exterior of your property, especially entry points and vulnerable areas. Darkness provides cover for illegal activities, so maintaining adequate lighting is essential.

Valuables like jewelry, watches, and computer equipment are often targeted by burglars. Secure them in a safe with a solid password. Additionally, consider keeping an inventory of valuable possessions, including serial numbers and photographs of each item, for insurance purposes. Stay informed about any local thefts or break-ins, and follow the advice provided by law enforcement agencies.
